In a nutshell, the boy and I finished chief year, passed boards, got new jobs, and moved to an incredible new city: San Diego -- a glorious representation of our dear old Golden State.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Just kidding, I'm not still singing Christmas songs. I promise. October through January was full of enough Christmas music to last the year, even more me. For the past 3 years, Nhan and I have hosted our residency program's annual Unofficial Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. Cramming 30-40 residents into our house for a potluck, fun holiday drinks, white elephant, christmas karaoke and the whole shebang leaves us swearing off hosting ever again, yet somehow when Christmas rolls around the following year, we never learn our lesson. And what is a party at the Vuongs' without a dessert spread? Last year, we did a Smore's Bar, but this year we decided to do a little less fire, a little more snow--Winter Wonderland to be more specific. 

Shrimp Linguini in Garlic White Wine Sauce

While this recipe can be done with any type of linguini, what made it truly stand out was the squid ink pasta we picked up at the farmer's market in Little Italy in San Diego. The first time I had squid ink pasta was at La Viola in Philadelphia. I wasn't really sure what I had gotten myself into, especially since I am not the biggest fan of squid to begin with. But I was pleasantly surprised that squid ink pasta doesn't taste like squid at all! If someone was to perform a blindfolded taste test, I don't think I'd really be able to tell the difference between this and regular pasta. Rather, it's the beautiful silky black color that gives it definition.

Ellis Turns One!

Boy it has been a ridiculously busy Fall and Winter. Between residency interview season and the holidays, time has flown by---I can't believe Christmas is already gone and we are only 2 days away from 2017. Well, just as fast as this season has passed, it feels like just yesterday that Dulce and Luis hosted their Little Man baby shower. Yep, that's right! Their little man is now one! Sweet, adorable, and stylish, he makes everybody want one just like him (and since you're probably wondering right now, no, we're not there yet 😉). And of course, another Rodriguez party means incredible style and decor. Dulce worked her magic again--this time with a woodlands theme. Check out that pallet backboard they put together! I was enlisted to help with the dessert spread (cupcakes and cake-pops).

It's That Pumpkin Season Again

Oh how I have looked forward to Fall. It was barely the end of September and I had already pulled out all my Fall decor in efforts to convince myself that it was truly the beginnings of Autumn despite the sweltering weather. 

In addition to boots and jackets, Fall is the season for pumpkin spice everything. Last year I shared a recipe for pumpkin spice bundt cake, but this year I wanted to try something a little less traditional, a little more fun. And what could be more fun than pumpkin spice donuts? Recipe adapted from Baker by Nature

The wonderful thing about these donuts is their light cakey texture, the best kind in my opinion. Not to mention that cinnamon sugar coating just brings out the pumpkin flavor in every bite!
